A Day Well Spent

03Nov07

Today we got out to do some hunting, some walking, and enjoying the snow that was beginning to fall. We saw about 6 whitetail with one young buck (2×2), a herd of elk at a far distance (I think the bull was with them), 1 bald eagle and his mate, one beaver and most interesting of all – 2 wolves. The wolves were fairly rare in the area we were in and one of them was all black and massive. We watched them for a while – we had a staring contest, then they loped off. Man, they are fast!
We followed a game trail away from the area and stumbled upon their den, quite unintentionally. We stayed clear of it, as we didn’t want to scent it up too much but it was obivous there were no other wolves at home.

We were clearing the area, moving on to return to the starting camp, when the wolves started barking. Really close. We couldn’t see them but they were nearby. I wasn’t worried about them attacking as the ones we saw looked fairly well fed. There was evidence of a meal around their den area too. But those wolves sounded angry, probably because we were invading.
Think of a large dog, in your neighborhood, barking loud. Then howling. Got that sound in your head? Good. Now magnify it by 10 and make it sound really menacing (if thats possible). That is how the wolves sounded. Fearsome.

Later on, the eagles startled us as they came out of nowhere flying about 20 feet off the ground, being chased by a murder of crows. When I say chased, I mean that the massive eagles made it appear as though they were being followed by the paparazzi. They were “just out for a flight” and the crows were just trying to discourage them. It was almost comical to see the eagles “ignore” them.

It was a day of thanking God for creation. It was a day well spent.
